Part 5 of the INRIX Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill Webinar Series

On May 16th, 2022, the US Department of Transportation released the much-anticipated Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.

This is one of the key road and traffic safety-focused initiatives included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (IIJA), and is a new discretionary grant program that will provide at least $5 billion in grants over the next 5 years. SS4A is specifically designed to support regional, local and Tribal governments in their efforts to prevent road deaths and severe injuries, aligns with the US Department of Transporation’s (USDOT) first-ever National Roadway Safety Strategy, and other zero death efforts (e.g., Vision Zero and Toward Zero Deaths).

A key part of this program is the development of a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, which must be in place before grant dollars can be used for implementation. And what we’ve heard from USDOT, and other safety advocates is the importance of collaborative efforts and a focus on planning process inputs – i.e., safety analysis, data-driven strategies, and equity considerations.
