The Challenge:
After COVID-related restrictions went into effect, the Virginia Department of Transportation noticed an unsettling increase (24%) in traffic fatalities resulting from excessive speeding. The initial challenge for VDOT was to track excessive speeds from areas of VA-7 where collisions were most often occurring.
Solution:
By gathering granular speed data provided by INRIX, VDOT was able to create a detailed picture of the problem.
Results:
The study revealed distinct patterns of excessive speeding based on time of day and day of the week. Furthermore, heavier traffic volumes appear to be a reliable controller of speed. The study has motivated VDOT to invest deeper into assessing speeding patterns on an even larger scale.
